During the evening the baby is taken from his cot. Inspector Mallory suspects an inside job by the valet when his secret wife arrives while Brown is more interested in the birth of the baby at a home for unmarried mothers. Mrs McCarthy under pressure from the diocese to provide a Christmas service fit for a Duke receives unexpected help from a vagrant she finds in the confessional.

The day after Professor Silverlake, consultant neurologist at the Dartmouth London hospital, has railed at three patients for smoking and drinking on the premises, all three are found dead. Silverlake, apparently the last doctor to visit the ward, later goes berserk with a rifle and is killed by police snipers. The ward's night nurse is also found dead. Nikki is deeply upset at having to perform an autopsy on a little girl who was murdered, apparently by Jason Bodle, on whom Silverlake once performed life-saving surgery, and wonders if the professor allowed himself to be shot out of remorse. Whilst Bodle is committed as unfit to plead, Silverlake's daughter, Naomi, asks Nikki to help clear her father's name of murder.

As Leo's replacement Thomas Chamberlain arrives Nikki investigates the murders of Rachel Freedman, shot in the head, and her little autistic son Nathan, who was poisoned. Nikki rejects policewoman Anne Burchett's theory that Rachel killed them both but is perturbed when an impostor, claiming to be Rachel's sister, visits the morgue. At the same time the disfigured corpse of Eva Liron is discovered, killed with the same poison as Nathan. She had been the nanny to French hot shot footballer Isaac Dreyfus and was planning to blackmail him over a sex tape of them both. Jewish Isaac is a controversial figure due to his anti-Muslim sentiments but he denies ant part in the murders. Then another victim, Isaac's agent Mousa, is discovered dead.
